Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

In order to release information that is considered an educational record, the student needs to sign a release form authorizing the Dean of Students Office to disclose information from the student’s educational record to a third party (including a parent).

A number of UM students know they have a medical condition that may require treatment while they are away at college. If a student would like support that includes conversations with a Dean of Students staff member regarding the student’s health or academic information, a signed consent is needed.

Additional information regarding FERPA may be found on the University of Michigan Office of the Registrar’s website.
