Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

There is no FERPA release for the entirety of a student’s educational record.  Each department, office, and program handles their own FERPA releases in accordance with federal regulation and university policy. Additional information regarding FERPA may be found on the University of Michigan Office of the Registrar’s website.

In order to release information from the Dean of Students Office that is considered an educational record, the student needs to sign a release form authorizing the Dean of Students Office to disclose information from the student’s educational record to a third party (including a parent). The DOS Office is only able to release information that concerns the office’s work with a student. We cannot release an educational record maintained by another office.
