Are unexpected hardships impacting your ability to meet basic needs? Are you experiencing an unforeseen, unexpected expense that you are having difficulty affording? The Dean of Students team is here to help you explore available financial resources and provide timely, flexible support so you get back to focusing on your studies.
Who can apply?
- All undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor.
- Students are typically eligible for emergency funding once per academic year. (Exceptions can be considered on a case-by-case basis)
How to apply
- Contact the Dean of Students Office by phone at (734) 764-7420, by email at [email protected], or in person during business hours.
- Be prepared to talk with a staff member about your situation, why it is unexpected and is creating financial hardship, and how much you need to cover the unexpected expense. You may also be asked to provide documentation, such as receipts, for expenses like:
- Travel (e.g., plane tickets, U-Haul rentals)
- Technology (e.g., laptops, WiFi cards)
- Medical costs (e.g., procedures, medications)
- Car repairs
- Prior to granting funding, the Dean of Students Office will work with the Office of Financial Aid to determine your eligibility to receive emergency aid based on your current funding.
- Once approved, funds are typically disbursed to your student account within 1-2 business days and to your bank account within 2-3 business days (if direct deposit has been set up). Remember, you’re not alone in facing these challenges. We’re here to guide you through this process and ensure you have the support you need to thrive.

- Essential belongings lost in incidents like fire or flood
Emergency funds generally do not cover:
- Expenses arising from financial planning issues
- University or personal debts
- Tuition and other university-related fees
- Legal fees and court costs
